Database Developer V (Backend / Cloud)
Location: Hybrid (Chicago or Houston preferred; open to strong remote candidates)
Contract Length: 12 months (potential extension)
Bill Rate: $75/hr
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Database Developer to support a mobile-first application ecosystem. This role focuses on designing, building, and maintaining secure, high-performing backend data solutions that support mobile APIs and cloud-native services.
The ideal candidate has strong experience with database design, backend integration, performance tuning, and cloud environments, and is comfortable working in an Agile delivery model on customer-facing systems.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain databases to support mobile and backend applications.
Build and support secure, scalable REST/JSON (or GraphQL) APIs optimized for mobile consumption, including authentication, authorization, and versioning.
Develop and operate cloud-native backend services, integrating databases, third-party services, and monitoring/logging tools.
Design and deploy data models, table structures, queries, and reports to support application and business needs.
Ensure high availability, performance, security, and scalability of database systems.
Identify inefficiencies in existing databases and recommend and implement improvements.
Diagnose and resolve database access, integrity, and performance issues.
Plan and coordinate data migrations between systems.
Apply upgrades, patches, and enhancements to existing database platforms.
Implement and maintain change control, testing, and documentation for database modifications.
Produce ad hoc queries and reports to support operational and business requirements.
Collaborate closely with backend, mobile, and QA teams in an Agile/Scrum environment.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Management Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
Strong experience as a Database Developer supporting enterprise or customer-facing applications.
Experience designing and optimizing relational databases and complex SQL queries.
Experience supporting backend services in a cloud environment (e.g., AWS or similar).
Solid understanding of performance tuning, data security, encryption, and access controls.
Familiarity with RESTful APIs and backend integration patterns.
Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively across technical teams.
Technical Skills
Relational database design and development
Advanced SQL (queries, procedures, performance tuning)
REST/JSON APIs (GraphQL a plus)
Cloud platforms (AWS or similar)
Data migration and change management
Monitoring, logging, and reliability best practices
Source control and Agile delivery environments
Work Environment
Hybrid role with 1–2 onsite days as needed
Standard work hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
No routine travel required
