Senior UX Designer – Core UX (Hybrid, Chicago Required)
Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior UX Designer to join the Core UX team, focused on enhancing the digital customer experience across all stages of the travel journey. This role will be instrumental in defining and executing United’s digital product strategy, ensuring a seamless, accessible, and intuitive user experience.
The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in UI/UX design, information architecture, interaction design, and accessibility best practices. This role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to create innovative and user-centered digital solutions.
This position is hybrid, requiring candidates to be based in Chicago or Houston, with occasional travel as needed for workshops or project-specific needs.
Key Responsibilities
Plan & Concept:
- Visualize and communicate ideas through design tools, sketches, whiteboards, and rapid prototyping.
- Initiate and respond to ideas for innovation and improvements based on user research, analysis, and competitive reviews.
- Identify user needs and business requirements to inform design solutions.
- Substantiate design approaches with data-driven analysis and projections for improvement.
Design & Refine:
- Ensure consistency across digital customer touchpoints, aligning with United’s UX and brand standards.
- Develop intuitive, engaging, and user-friendly interactions for web and mobile platforms.
- Drive the creation of navigation schemes, patterns, components, and templates, ensuring a cohesive and dynamic customer experience.
- Create low- and high-fidelity prototypes, adhering to an iterative and collaborative design process.
- Collaborate with usability researchers to test designs and refine solutions based on user feedback.
Define & Communicate:
- Deliver detailed design specifications, including process flows, wireframes, mockups, redlines, and prototypes.
- Present design work to the UX team, product managers, and executives for feedback and refinement.
- Work closely with developers, product managers, and project teams to ensure successful design implementation.
- Collaborate with QA teams to identify, document, and verify design-related issues and fixes.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior designers, fostering best practices and professional growth.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- 7+ years of professional UX design experience required.
- Experience designing UI components for design systems.
- Strong understanding of user interface design, information architecture, and interaction design best practices.
- Expertise in accessibility and inclusive design principles.
- Excellent communication skills and experience working in multi-disciplinary, highly collaborative teams.
- Proficiency in Figma and other related design software.
- Solid grasp of web design principles and front-end technologies.
- Ability to write detailed design specifications, including IA, workflows, and page functionality.
- Self-starter with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong ability to present, defend, and iterate on design decisions based on feedback and research.
Preferred Skills & Certifications
- Experience in writing design documentation for engineering teams.
- Background in user-centered design for large-scale digital platforms.
- Experience working in agile product development environments.
Work Schedule & Location
- Work Model: Hybrid – candidates must be based in Chicago or Houston.
- Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM CST.
- Travel Requirement: Occasional travel for workshops or project needs, with reimbursement provided.
Contract Details
- Contract Length: 6 months at a time, with extensions as needed.
- Employment Type: Contract, with the opportunity to apply for full-time positions in the future.
- Range: $70+
- Legal Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
